Design an app that empowers people to learn new vocabulary.
*This project was completed as part of the "Introduction" section of my UX Certification.
Users need a way to consistently and efficiently learn, practice, and retain vocabulary because it will will help them to use the vocabulary in that specific space.
We will know this to be true when users are confidently able to use the vocabulary words correctly in the appropriate setting.
We believe that by creating an app that allows users to see their process visually and have various modalities of practice, they will be able to correctly use the words in the appropriate setting.
Why the App is Successful:
This app is successful because flashcards are easy to make, they are organized in a way that makes sense, there are varied methods of practicing/reviewing/learning terms, and it is appealing & useful for many different demographics - whether you’re a student in college, or a teacher.
Why the App is Successful:
This app is successful because it caters to those that want to add tags to their flashcards & want more customization options. Anki also uses spaced repetition to increase comprehension and retention.
Why the App is Successful:
This app is successful because it is straightforward, simple, & easy to use. Chegg was the most simple & straightforward of the three apps. The thing that stood out about the Chegg app was the text to voice feature when reviewing terms.
Research was conducted via interviews lasting 15-20 minutes. 4 individuals were interviewed ranging from ages 31 and 51 and all of the participants had prior experience having to learn new vocabulary words.
1) To better understand user behavior around learning new vocabulary
2) Identifying user needs and pain points
3) Collecting data on the context and frequency in which users learn new vocabulary
4) Determine user behavior and attitudes about learning new vocabulary
1) It’s easier to understand the meaning of a word when it is used in context.
2) It helps with retention if one is able to apply the new vocabulary immediately after they learn it
Three moderated in-person usability tests were carried out at various locations.
1) Open the app & create an account
2) Complete the onboarding
3) Create a new deck of flashcards
4) Study a deck of flashcards
5) Add new flashcards to an existing deck
All three participants were able to complete all the tasks asked of them.
• The app is easy to navigate and use.
• The process of completing tasks is straightforward & clear
1) Too much space between “create an account” & “password” buttons when creating an account using a 3rd party.
2) It isn’t clear that the “Created or Imported Name”” button on the welcome page is preset.
3) Too much space between “correct” text & “continue” button when a user gets the answer correct in “Learn & Practice”.
4) If the user decides to ski the tutorial after signing up, there is no way to go back if they decide to do it later.
1) Less space between the “create an account” & “password” buttons
2) Add an “edit name” button below the “Created or Imported Name” Information.
3) Less space between the “correct” text and “continue” button
4) Add an option to do the tutorial in “settings”.
